About UplandNest
UplandNest is an independent information resource covering backcountry hiking, topographic map reading, and wilderness navigation across Canada. The articles published here draw on publicly available research, government data from Natural Resources Canada and Parks Canada, and documented practices from Canadian wilderness guides and outdoor educators.
The focus is on practical knowledge: how to read a 1:50,000 topographic sheet, how to plan a multi-day route in a specific region, how to understand permit systems, and what the current understanding of bear encounter management looks like. UplandNest does not sell equipment, book guided tours, or represent any commercial interest in outdoor recreation.
What UplandNest Covers
Topographic Map Reading
Contour interpretation, grid referencing, magnetic declination correction, and terrain feature identification on Canadian NTS maps. The guides reference the 1:50,000 scale as the primary planning tool and include worked examples from specific Canadian regions.
Trail Planning and Permit Systems
Route selection criteria by season and region, Parks Canada reservation mechanics, provincial permit frameworks, and Crown land regulations. Articles are updated when reservation opening dates or regulatory requirements change.
Wilderness Safety
Bear species identification, food storage regulations (canisters, hanging systems, infrastructure), encounter response protocols, emergency signalling, and weather pattern recognition in mountain terrain. Information is cross-referenced against current Parks Canada wildlife management publications.
Corrections and Updates
Regulations change. Permit requirements, bear canister mandates, and trail conditions are revised regularly by Parks Canada and provincial authorities. If an article contains information that is out of date or inaccurate, corrections are welcome at info@uplandnest.org. Each article carries a "last updated" date to help readers assess currency.
